Police have sought the dropping of reckless and drunk driving charges against the present public security ministry secretary Ravi Seneviratne, when a hearing against him took place at the Mt. Lavinia high court.

The case against retired senior DIG relates to a vehicle accident at seaside road in Wellawatte in 2013.

His lawyer also requested the case to be transferred to additional magistrate Hemali Halpandeniya or other judge, after an amended charge sheet submitted by the police was turned down by the presiding additional magistrate.

It says the case should proceed with only the charge of failure to prevent a vehicle accident.

That is pursuant to instructions to the Wellawatte police OIC by the DIG (legal directorate) Ruwan Gunasekara as instructed by the attorney general.

The additional magistrate called for AG’s advice and fixed the next hearing for 19 September.
