Postal workers protest on World Post Day

All postal workers across the country reported to duty today wearing black armbands in protest, marking World Post Day with a display of silent dissent.

The move comes in response to recent remarks made by Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara, which union leaders say have discredited the dignity of postal employees.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, Manjula Bandara Jayasundara, General Secretary of the Postal and Telecommunication Officers’ Union, said the decision to wear black was a direct response to an “insulting” accusation made by the Postmaster General.

Postmaster General Sathkumara recently said that millions of rupees in overtime allowances had been fraudulently claimed by staff without proper biometric verification.

Jayasundara stated that the union would not only continue protest actions but also pursue legal action against the Postmaster General for his public claims.
