Sri Lanka’s Opposition Leader, Sajith Premadasa, has raised concerns over alleged external interference in the country’s judicial process, following a visit to the prison to see former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Speaking to reporters outside the prison on Saturday (23), Premadasa claimed that a “third party” had predicted the court’s actions in the case against Wickremesinghe which casts serious doubt on the independence of the judiciary.
“A third party had actually predicted how the judiciary was going to act with regard to the case against the former President. How can such a thing take place when the Constitution is clear about how the rule of law should prevail?” Premadasa asked.
He also pointed out that an individual making predictions on social media regarding the implementation of the law is an act of contempt of court.
Noting that it is inappropriate and unlawful for third parties to claim to know the outcome of legal proceedings, he said immediate action must be taken in such cases.
