President should also face investigation over helicopter use

Historian Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri says that the current government should also be concerned about the legal case filed against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, noting it may set a precedent for broader accountability.

“Not only Ranil Wickremesinghe and his group, but also this government should be afraid of this incident,” Professor Dewasiri said, speaking at a media briefing.

He said that the opposition has already signalled its intention to investigate the actions of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake should power shift once again.

Dewasiri welcomed such scrutiny, adding that holding leaders accountable regardless of political affiliation is vital for a functioning democracy.

Referring to recent public criticism over President Dissanayake’s alleged use of a helicopter to visit his mother, Dewasiri pointed out that no leader is above the law and he too should be investigated.
