A regional dialogue on strengthening community resilience against human smuggling and trafficking was held in Colombo on January 23.
The event was organized by AMCOR, a national volunteer organization, with funding support from Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.
The event saw the participation of several dignitaries, including Sanjeeva Wimalagunaratne, Director General of the National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations, Gabrielle Isaac, Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand to Sri Lanka, Radha Barooah, Regional Coordinator of GI-TOC, Muralitharan, National Director of AMCOR, and Duminda Perera, Finance Director of AMCOR.
Representatives from organizations working on safe migration initiatives in India and Sri Lanka also took part in the dialogue.
The discussion, co-facilitated by AMCOR’s Senior Program Manager Sivayogarajan and GI-TOC’s Radha Barooah, covered key strategies and measures needed to combat transnational organized crimes such as human smuggling and trafficking.
Topics such as policy reforms, government strategies, recommendations, and the contributions of civil society organizations were deliberated and documented during the session.
Participants included representatives from civil society organizations across 25 districts in Sri Lanka and regions in India, including Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu.
Officials from the New Zealand High Commission in Colombo also shared insights and highlighted the necessity of advancing projects related to safe migration in the future.
It is noteworthy that AMCOR has been implementing various initiatives for over a decade in collaboration with the government across several districts in Sri Lanka to promote safe migration and combat human smuggling and trafficking.
