The weekly food commodity bulletin issued by the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agricultural Research and Training Institute in the last week of January shows that the retail prices of all local rice varieties have increased, with the price of a kilo of red rice increasing by Rs. 18.
According to the report, Nadu rice has increased by between 4 and 5 percent due to the decrease in wholesale supply, and a kilo of Nadu rice was sold in the range of 230 to 240 rupees. Also, it is said that Samba and Red Raw rice were not available in the market.
However, compared to the previous year (2024), the wholesale price of Nadu Grade II rice has increased by 13 percent, while the price of Keeri Samba rice has decreased by 26 percent. Furthermore, the increase in the retail price of a kilo of red raw rice is 55 percent.
