Salt shortage hits local markets amid import delays

A shortage of salt has been reported in several parts of the country, with the Salt Producers’ Association attributing the situation to delays in the importation of salt stocks.

Speaking on the matter, Chairman of the Association, Ganaka Amarasinghe, confirmed that the disruption in supply chains has led to reduced availability in the market.

He expressed confidence, however, that the shortfall would be temporary and is likely to be resolved once incoming shipments arrive in the country.

“In the coming days, the arrival of salt consignments is expected to ease the shortage,” Amarasinghe stated.

In the meantime, consumers are already feeling the impact.

Several retailers have reportedly increased prices, selling 1-kilogram packets of crystal salt for between Rs. 450 and Rs. 500 — a sharp rise from normal retail levels.

Retailers also warned that if the current scarcity persists, the price per packet could exceed Rs. 800 in the near future.
