The eagerly anticipated Annual General Meeting and election of Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA), originally slated for 18 August 2025, has been postponed due to “unavoidable circumstances.”

Incumbent Secretary General Saman Kumara Gunawardna confirmed the delay in a statement, adding that the Director General of the Department of Sports Development will announce a new date in due course.

The postponement comes at a crucial juncture for SLA, which was preparing for a rare three-way contest for the presidency for the 2025–2027 term.

The race gained prominence following the closure of nominations on 29 July, and is further intensified by newly introduced sports regulations that prevent long-serving office-bearers from re-contesting.

This has opened the door to both emerging figures and experienced former officials.
