Sri Lanka flood relief faces challenges as donations overflow and go unused

Relief efforts in flood-affected areas of Sri Lanka have been hampered by mismanaged food distributions from independent donors, officials and locals said, raising concerns about waste.

Photos circulating on social media and reports from residents show that some donated food has been left on roads after arriving in excess, without proper assessment of the number of people in need.

Pradeep Kodippili, Director of Public Awareness at the Disaster Management Centre, said government and tri-force distributions are carefully calculated and targeted to ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable, minimizing wastage.

He urged independent donors to channel contributions through officially approved government groups.

He said the distribution done by independent groups is limited due to inaccessibility in certain areas.

By donating to the government, the public can ensure that food reaches people still stranded in vulnerable locations, delivered efficiently by the tri-forces, he added.
