Deputy Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe has admitted that Sri Lanka faces limited leverage in negotiations with the United States over newly imposed tariffs, set to take effect on August 1.
Speaking to the media following his participation in a public event, Abeysinghe said Sri Lanka lacks sufficient economic clout or strategic offerings to influence Washington’s trade decisions in the way more powerful countries might.
Despite these challenges, the Deputy Minister said that discussions are continuing in an effort to reduce the impact of the tariffs on Sri Lankan exports.
The lack of formal progress has raised concerns among exporters, as industries brace for the potential impact of the new tariff regime.
