Sri Lanka has taken a significant step toward reforming its justice system, with the government appointing an expert committee to lay the groundwork for an Independent Prosecutor’s Office.

The Ministry of Justice and National Integration confirmed that a high-level discussion was held on Tuesday (1 October), chaired by Justice Minister Harsha Nanayakkara.

The meeting focused on developing the initial framework and strategic plan for the proposed office, aimed at strengthening the impartiality and effectiveness of prosecutions in the country.

According to the Ministry, once a preliminary concept paper is drafted, the government will invite feedback from the public and civil society organisations to ensure transparency and inclusivity in shaping the institution.

Among those who participated in the discussion were Supreme Court Justice and President’s Counsel Yasantha Kodagoda, Attorney General and President’s Counsel Parinda Ranasinghe, and President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, Attorney-at-Law Rajeev Amarasuriya.
