Postal services in Sri Lanka are likely to face significant disruption as trade unions representing postal and telecommunications officers announced a nationwide strike set to begin on Sunday (17).

The Postal and Telecommunications Officers’ Union, in collaboration with the United Postal Trade Unions’ Front (UPTUF), said the strike is being launched in support of 19 key demands, including the payment of overdue overtime allowances and opposition to a directive mandating fingerprint-based attendance for officers in administrative and accounts departments.

The strike is scheduled to commence at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow from the Colombo Central Mail Exchange and will escalate into an indefinite islandwide walkout from midnight, affecting both postal and administrative operations.

However, Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara stated that sub-postmasters from 3,354 sub-post offices nationwide will not be participating in the strike. He assured the public that services at these locations would continue as usual.

He also warned that postal delivery services in urban centres and main administrative hubs may experience delays due to the union action.
