Sri Lanka is on course for a second sovereign default by 2028 unless urgent corrective measures are taken, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has warned.

Speaking in Ampara on Monday (01), Premadasa said the country has failed to sustain the economic growth needed to repay around USD 5.5 billion in external debt, raising serious concerns about the government’s fiscal direction.

He also criticised the government’s lack of engagement with proposed amendments to the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility, which he claims could offer a more sustainable path forward.

“The silence from the government is deeply troubling,” Premadasa said, calling for greater transparency and urgency in managing the country’s economic recovery.
