The Ministry Youth Affairs and Sports has temporarily suspended the registrations of three national sports associations.

Accordingly, the Ministry has suspended the registrations of the Athletics, Table Tennis, and Gymnastics associations, effective from August 25, 2025.

The suspension was announced through an extraordinary government gazette under Sections 32 and 33 of the Sports Law No. 25 of 1973, as amended.

This decision comes amid ongoing concerns over constitutional compliance and the conduct of elections within these associations.

The Ministry has appointed its Secretary as the interim authority to oversee the administration of the suspended bodies until new office bearers are elected under revised constitutions.

This measure aims to restore order and ensure the national sports bodies adhere strictly to the legal framework governing sports governance in Sri Lanka.

Notably, the Athletics Association’s election, originally scheduled for 18 August, was postponed following the failure of the appointed election committee to conduct the process in line with the Sports Act, triggering this wider intervention.
