Sri Lanka will provide Rs. 5 million to each household whose home was destroyed in flooding or landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwa, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament on Friday (05), outlining the government’s largest disaster-recovery housing package to date.

The government will also allocate state land for families needing to rebuild in safer locations.

If suitable land cannot be provided, an additional Rs. 5 million will be granted to the affected household, the president said.

Deputy Minister of Defence, addressing lawmakers separately, said families whose homes suffered structural damage but were not fully destroyed will receive compensation of up to Rs. 2.5 million.

Final payment amounts will be based on official damage assessments conducted across affected districts.

He noted that the Rs. 25,000 distributed earlier to impacted families was only an initial grant intended for sanitation and basic cleanup, not a final compensation package.
