Asia Rugby awarded the hosting rights to Sri Lanka Rugby, a move officials said reflects renewed confidence in the country’s rugby governance and long-term development plans under its new administration.

The tournament was last held in Sri Lanka in 2000. That edition remains a landmark moment for Sri Lankan rugby, when the Junior Tuskers, led by Jivan Goonathilake, qualified for the World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Chile.

Officials said the 2026 championship will bring the top under-19 rugby teams from across Asia to Sri Lanka, offering local players valuable international exposure and competitive experience.

The event is also expected to help raise standards at the grassroots and junior levels by strengthening development pathways and high-performance structures.
