Sri Lanka is experiencing one of the fastest-growing elderly populations in Asia.
Consultant Community Physician Dr. Nishani Ubeysekara said that the nation’s demographic landscape has shifted dramatically over the past decade, posing new challenges for public health and social welfare.
Speaking at a media briefing organized by the Health Promotion Bureau, Dr. Ubeysekara highlighted that the proportion of Sri Lankans aged 60 and above has increased from 12% in 2012 to 18% in 2024.
Projections indicate that by 2040, nearly one in four citizens — or 25% of the population — will be elderly.
Sri Lanka’s ageing trend is among the most rapid in the Asian region.
This demographic transition stems from rising life expectancy and a decline in birth rates.
