State officials flouting law in arrests, says HR Commissioner

Human Rights Commissioner Nimal G. Punchihewa has raised concerns over serious legal violations in some recent arrests, urging state officials to uphold both domestic laws and international human rights conventions.

He made the remarks at the opening of the Human Rights Commission’s new regional office in Nuwara Eliya.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of lawful conduct by authorities, warning that lapses could undermine public trust and international obligations.
