The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has reported a disturbing surge in child abuse cases in Sri Lanka during the first nine months of 2025.

According to the NCPA, 414 complaints of child sexual abuse were recorded, including 192 cases of serious sexual exploitation, while 62 complaints of teenage pregnancies were also reported.

From January 1 to September 30, 2025, the NCPA received a total of 7,677 complaints, of which 6,296 fell under the Child Protection Authority Act, while 1,381 were outside its jurisdiction.

September alone saw the highest volume of complaints, with 1,176 cases reported.

Among the complaints registered under the NCPA Act, 49 involved sexual exploitation of girls, 111 concerned child labour, and 203 related to child trafficking.

Complaints outside the Act included cyber violence against children (102), domestic abuse (38), suicide attempts (13), and one reported abduction.

Drug-related issues among minors are also on the rise as the NCPA recorded 83 complaints linked to drug misuse this year, including 27 cases where children were exploited for drug trafficking and three cases involving sales of drugs to children under 16.
