Opposition MP Mujibur Rahman says the National People’s Power (NPP) government is harbouring individuals linked to the cover-up of the 2012 murder of national rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, casting doubt on its commitment to justice and accountability.
Speaking to reporters in Colombo on Wednesday (01), the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentarian alleged that some of those involved in suppressing the original investigation into Thajudeen’s death are now part of the incumbent National People’s Power (NPP) administration.
Rahman made the claim in response to reports linking Anura Vidanagamage, also known as “Kajja”, to the Thajudeen murder case.
Kajja was killed along with two of his children in Middeniya earlier this year, in a murder believed to have been ordered by a figure known as “Backhoe Saman,” who was recently extradited from Indonesia.
Rahman also criticised the NPP for failing to act on its 2024 election pledges to bring to justice those responsible for the Easter Sunday bombings, and the high-profile killings of Thajudeen, journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, and cartoonist Pradeep Ekneligoda.
He warned that as long as key posts in the Public Security Ministry and the police remain occupied by individuals with ties to previous regimes, the public should not expect genuine progress in these cases.
