George Foreman, the legendary two-time world heavyweight boxing champion and successful entrepreneur, passed away on 21 March 2025 at the age of 76.
Born on 10 January 1949 in Marshall, Texas, Foreman rose from a challenging upbringing to become an iconic figure in sports and business.
Foreman’s boxing career began with a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He turned professional the following year, quickly making a name for himself with his formidable punching power. In 1973, he claimed the world heavyweight title by defeating the undefeated Joe Frazier. However, he is perhaps best remembered for his 1974 bout against Muhammad Ali in the “Rumble in the Jungle,” where he suffered his first professional loss.
After a brief retirement in 1977, during which he became an ordained minister, Foreman made a remarkable comeback to boxing in 1987. In 1994, at the age of 45, he regained the heavyweight title by defeating Michael Moorer, becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in history. He retired permanently in 1997 with a record of 76 wins (68 by knockout) and 5 losses.
Beyond boxing, Foreman achieved significant success as an entrepreneur. He became the face of the George Foreman Grill, a product that sold over 100 million units worldwide, earning him substantial wealth and a place in pop culture.
Foreman was also a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Mary Joan Martelly, whom he married in 1985, and his 12 children. Notably, he named all five of his sons George: George Jr., George III (“Monk”), George IV (“Big Wheel”), George V (“Red”), and George VI (“Little Joey”).
Tributes have poured in from around the world. Fellow boxing legend Mike Tyson expressed his sorrow, stating that Foreman’s legacy “will never be forgotten.” Foreman’s family has requested privacy as they mourn his passing.
George Foreman’s life was a testament to resilience, faith, and reinvention. His contributions to boxing, business, and his community have left an indelible mark on history.
