A senior Sri Lankan civil servant has reportedly requested a transfer from his current post due to an erosion of professional decorum within the ministry he heads.
According to reliable sources, the secretary of a prominent government ministry has expressed serious discomfort over being routinely addressed in public by staff, including junior officers and even drivers, as “Secretary Comrade”.
The official is said to have raised his concerns directly with the subject minister, noting that the use of such informal political terminology in a professional setting was inappropriate and disruptive to the ministry’s functioning.
However, the complaint was reportedly met with a light-hearted dismissal.
The minister is said to have remarked that even his own party colleagues refer to him as “Minister Comrade”, suggesting the secretary should not take the matter too seriously.
Disheartened by the response and the perceived lack of support for upholding professional standards, the secretary is now understood to be actively seeking a transfer from his post.
