A foreign tourist family has publicly criticized Sri Lanka’s visa extension process, describing it as “the most painful experience ever,” after attempting to extend their stay in the country.

The family, known as “The Hutchinsons” on TikTok, arrived under the visa-free scheme and sought to extend their visas at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla.

They said the process was complicated and stressful due to a lack of clear procedures for foreign tourists.

“Wow, what a tough day at the immigration office in Colombo, Sri Lanka! This definitely wasn’t worth the hassle for an extra week here. Anyway, all sorted and time to enjoy Christmas,” the family wrote in a TikTok post.

The family’s experience highlights ongoing challenges faced by tourists in navigating Sri Lanka’s visa and immigration systems, particularly during peak travel periods.
