The United Nations has condemned Sri Lanka for its continued use of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), despite repeated assurances from the government that the law would be repealed.
In a report released this week, the UN highlighted ongoing human rights violations linked to the PTA, including arbitrary arrests, torture, and deaths in custody.
It called for the immediate suspension of the law and urged the government to revise other legislation seen as curbing civil liberties, notably the Online Safety Act and the proposed NGO Bill.
The UN report also expressed concern over the deepening impact of Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, warning that it is disproportionately affecting the country’s most vulnerable communities.
It called on international financial institutions to provide Sri Lanka with fiscal space to ensure basic rights and social protections are upheld.
