An infant remains in serious condition following a road accident involving MP Asoka Ranwala, as the six-month-old’s father and relatives question as to why no breathalyser test had been done on the MP promptly.

The father said the child still had a swelling of the size of a mango in the back of his head and he cries and refuses milk.

His wife has a leg broken from two places and, along with her mother, is to undergo surgery at Colombo National Hospital.

Speaking to the media, the father said Ranwala had apologized to him over the accident, but his son, a doctor, had told him, “The child is still six months old. It was an accident. There’s nothing to worry about,” which, he said, made him angrier.

So far, no test had been done to determine if the MP had been drunk at the time of the incident, he said further.

Hours after his jeep collided with the car, Ranwala came to hospital with a complaint of high-blood pressure and was taken in a wheel-chair, said the father.

Relatives were refused entrance as the two injured adults were kept in trollies, but vehicles carrying the MP’s supporters entered the hospital premises easily, he said.

A group led by the JVP chairman of the Biyagama Pradeshiya Sabha had arrived and gave a contact number of a lawyer, said another relative.
