Undervalued sale of state vehicles by North Central Provincial Council

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dayasiri Jayasekara has levelled serious allegations against the North Central Provincial Council, claiming that 22 state-owned luxury vehicles were sold at significantly undervalued prices through a secretive tender process.

Addressing the media, Jayasekara said that 12 out of the 22 vehicles, including three Toyota Prados and a BMW, were auctioned for a total of just Rs. 28 million.

He noted that the amount the vehicles were sold at was grossly disproportionate to their true market value.

“A single vehicle model like the Cabriolet could fetch that amount,” Jayasekara said.

He further alleged that the vehicles were sold without accounting for standard government taxes typically applied to vehicle imports, resulting in further loss to the state.

He pointed out the sale of a BMW used by the former Chief Minister and Governor, which was reportedly sold for under Rs. 5 million, despite an estimated market value exceeding Rs. 15 million.

“These vehicles are public assets, and their sale must be conducted in a transparent and responsible manner,” Jayasekara emphasized, accusing the government of mishandling public property for private benefit.

He also revealed that additional vehicles are reportedly being prepared for auction under similar terms.
