The United National Party (UNP) has welcomed the reduction in reciprocal tariffs imposed on Sri Lanka by the United States, while urging the government to clarify the nature of the trade and security arrangements reportedly agreed with Washington.

In a statement issued today, the UNP praised the government and its negotiating team for their role in securing a reduction in the tariff rate from 30% to 20%, following the signing of a new Executive Order by U.S. President Donald Trump.

However, the UNP stressed the need for transparency, calling on the government to disclose the terms and implications of the “meaningful trade and security commitments” referenced in the Executive Order.

President Trump’s directive states that “some trading partners have agreed to, or are on the verge of agreeing to, meaningful trade and security commitments with the United States,” though it does not specify the details of such agreements.
