Approximately five individuals in Sri Lanka are at risk of dying daily due to chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The National Unit for Kidney Disease Prevention and Research (NRDPRU) says that approximately five individuals in Sri Lanka are at risk of dying daily due to chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Speaking at a media briefing organised by the Health Promotion Bureau, Dr. Chintha Gunaratne, Director of the National Unit for Kidney Disease Prevention and Research (NRDPRU), confirmed that more than 1,600 people in the country lost their lives to kidney-related illnesses in 2023 alone.

Dr. Gunaratne, a Consultant Community Physician, stressed the silent nature of CKD, noting that symptoms often emerge only at an advanced stage.

She urged individuals, especially those living with non-communicable diseases such as diabetes or hypertension, to undergo regular kidney screenings as a precaution.
