The Ministry of Health has moved to find both an immediate and permanent solution to concerns surrounding the official uniforms worn by Muslim female nursing officers at Kalmunai Hospital and other hospitals.

The issue was taken up at a special meeting held at the Parliamentary complex this morning, chaired by the Health Minister and attended by Muslim and Tamil government parliamentarians.

The meeting focused on the sensitive issue that has attracted public attention in recent days, with participants stressing the importance of resolving the matter through dialogue and ensuring that the functioning of hospitals is not disrupted.

Discussions also centred on the need to safeguard the rights and professional requirements of the nursing officers concerned while maintaining harmony and understanding among hospital staff and the wider community.

Following the discussions, the Health Minister assured the participating MPs that immediate short-term measures would be introduced to address the current situation.

At the same time, the Minister said the Ministry would work towards identifying and implementing a permanent solution without delay, with the aim of preventing similar disputes from arising at Kalmunai or other hospitals in the future.

The move comes amid growing attention to questions surrounding the appropriate official attire of Muslim female nursing officers, particularly in areas where religious and cultural considerations have become part of discussions over hospital regulations.

The Health Ministry is expected to pursue further discussions with relevant stakeholders as it works towards a solution that balances professional hospital requirements with the rights of nursing officers.

The Minister reiterated that the issue should be handled peacefully and practically, while ensuring that hospital services continue without disruption and that the matter does not create divisions among communities or healthcare workers.
