Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has confirmed that discussions on the Trincomalee oil farm project and the proposed India–Sri Lanka oil pipeline took place during the recent visit of Indian Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan to Sri Lanka.

Speaking to the media in Colombo on Sunday (19), Misri said the planned energy hub in the northeastern port of Trincomalee was a key topic during talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

He noted that the project, which also involves the United Arab Emirates, has been under discussion since 2023. Although a specific timeline has not yet been set, Misri described the initiative as strategically important, with a substantial overall investment.

Emphasizing urgency, Misri said both sides agreed there is “no further time to lose” in advancing such major projects and highlighted the need to move quickly toward implementation.

He added that if the Trincomalee energy hub had already been operational, it could have played a crucial role amid current global challenges, particularly in light of disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East.

Sri Lanka, India, and the UAE signed an agreement last year—following two years of negotiations—to develop a multi-product oil pipeline between India and Sri Lanka and to establish the Trincomalee oil storage and distribution complex.
