LG polls date announcement to be delayed further

Announcing a fresh date for the local government election is likely to be delayed further, said the Election Commission.

The reason cited is the local authorities’ elections (amendment) act not yet being adopted.

Political parties have been calling for nominations for the LG polls again.

Accordingly, the cabinet recently gave the go ahead for the annulment of the nominations already called.

For that purpose, the particular act should first be amended, the Commission said.

The cabinet decision and the draft with the changes were referred to the commission, which forwarded it with amendments to the legal draftsman’s department.

Once the act gets adopted by parliament, the date for the election would be announced, said the commission.

With the government hinting at a date in the first quarter of 2025, the commission declared it would make an announcement after the GCE advanced level examination concludes today.
