Sri Lanka’s former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to join an opposition-led rally in Nugegoda on Friday (21), organisers said, marking one of his most visible political appearances in recent months.

The rally is being backed by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and a coalition of opposition parties including the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP).

Speaking to reporters during a visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, where he received blessings for his birthday, Rajapaksa said he intended to attend the rally.

“People must rise against the anti-people actions being carried out by the current government,” he said.
