The National People’s Power (NPP) government is at a critical stage where it has to choose between either economic or political freedom for the people, said Samabima leader Deepthi Kumara Gunaratne.
He surmised the government would take strong decisions for economic freedom as China had done in the past, adding Beijing won’t decide to make a USD 3.1 billion investment in Sri Lanka without considering her stability in governance.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is unlike Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena who didn’t have a political project of their own and were able to abdicate power easily, said Gunaratne in an interview with Ideas Front YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, political commentator Vipula Karunatilake noted India’s emergence as a power to challenge Europe while England, Germany and France go into economic crises, and its purchasing of fuel from Russia as a demonstration of its capabilities.
For her part, Sri Lanka cannot build the island economy without the support of both India and China, which is the main investor in the US, he noted.
Karunatilake also observed the NPP government’s challenge to manage conflicts of interest between those two superpowers in its administration.
