The National People’s Power (NPP) secured control of the Kolonnawa Urban Council following a tense council session that saw a majority of opposition members exit the chamber in protest.

The sudden walkout by nine members paved the way for the NPP to take charge, with Dhammika Wijayamuni elected as Chairman.

After the walk out, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) councillor Susil Kumara, who received the highest number of preferential votes, remained in the House and lent support to the NPP, facilitating the vote that confirmed Wijayamuni’s leadership.
