Opposition political parties are preparing to initiate discussions aimed at forming a new common opposition alliance.

The preliminary round of talks is scheduled to take place in the second week of July and political parties currently in the opposition will be formally invited to join the dialogue, which is expected to lay the foundation for a broader political front to counter the NPP government’s increasingly authoritarian trajectory.

General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Ranjith Madduma Bandara, said that preparations are already underway in this regard.

“This discussion is essential given the current political climate. We are making the necessary arrangements, and it is important that all opposition forces come together to collectively critique the government’s unilateral actions,” he said, emphasising the urgency of the moment and the necessity for a unified opposition response.
