A new study has revealed an alarming mental health crisis among schoolchildren in Sri Lanka, with 60% reportedly suffering from depression, according to findings released by the Sri Lanka College of Psychiatrists.

Speaking on World Mental Health Day, Professor Miyuru Chandradasa, President of the College, described the results as deeply concerning, especially among older students.

The data indicates that 24% of children in higher grades are particularly affected by depression, pointing to a troubling rise in mental health issues in the education system.

“This psychiatric assessment found that the intense pressure of education, problems with parents at home, the use of social media, and physical abuse of children are the main causes of this mental stress,” said Professor Chandradasa.

He also noted that the crisis extends beyond children, with 19% of the country’s overall population now showing symptoms of depression.
