All opposition parties in Sri Lanka have agreed to convene in Colombo today (26) to express solidarity with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who remains in remand custody following his arrest last Friday (22).
The announcement was made by Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Assistant Leader of the United National Party (UNP) and former minister, after a special meeting involving representatives from multiple opposition parties.
Kariyawasam criticised the denial of bail to Wickremesinghe, stating that even basic bail conditions appear to have been disregarded by the police. “The arrest of former President Wickremesinghe is a clear case of political repression,” he said.
General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Duminda Dissanayake, urged all those who cherish democratic values to join the gathering in Colombo.
