Chairman of the United National Party (UNP) Wajira Abeywardena raised strong concerns about Sri Lanka’s economic future, predicting that the country could face a complete economic collapse by November or December of this year.
Speaking at a UNP-organized local government election rally, former Minister Abeywardena, drawing on his knowledge of economics, said that the crisis was not just possible but inevitable.
“I’m telling you right now, the country will collapse by November. That’s where we’re headed,” he told supporters. “But don’t worry. When it happens, I’ll be there to catch it.”
Abeywardena emphasized that despite not holding a current parliamentary seat, he would not remain passive during the nation’s worst moments.
“I don’t need to be in Parliament to serve my country,” he declared. “When things go wrong, I’ll be there to help lift the nation back up.”
The former Minister also suggested that Sri Lanka is on a perilous path, with those in power failing to avert the looming crisis.
Though he did not detail the specific triggers of the predicted collapse, his comments come amidst ongoing public concerns about Sri Lanka’s foreign debt, high living costs, and political instability.
