Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) councilor Lasantha Wickramasekara has been elected as the new Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha following a closely contested vote held on Wednesday.

Wickramasekara secured the chairmanship with 23 votes, narrowly defeating the National People’s Power (NPP) candidate, who received 22 votes, in an open ballot.

The vote comes after several delays due to procedural and political disagreements that had stalled the selection process for weeks.

Meanwhile, Denagama Rahula Thero, an opposition councilor, was elected Deputy Chairman of the Sabha.
