The United National Party (UNP) has lifted all disciplinary actions and membership suspensions previously imposed on party members who defected to the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

The decision was taken during a meeting of the UNP’s Working Committee on Monday (16) at the party’s headquarters in Sirikotha, chaired by party leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The move is seen as a significant step toward political reconciliation, removing long-standing barriers that have prevented cooperation since the formation of the breakaway SJB in 2020.

To review the legal implications of the decision, the Working Committee appointed a special panel headed by former Attorney General and President’s Counsel Tilak Marapana.

UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena said the decision paves the way for renewed collaboration, noting that “key obstacles to unity have now been cleared.”

The committee also unanimously passed a resolution expressing gratitude to those who supported the party during challenging times, including the period during which Wickremesinghe was in custody.
