Dishonest politicians may not be able to walk freely anymore – Wajira

Chairman of the United National Party (UNP) and former Minister Wajira Abeywardana said that politicians who have repeatedly deceived the public may soon find themselves unable to walk freely in the streets.

Speaking at a UNP divisional meeting held in Balapitiya yesterday, Abeywardhana highlighted the growing intolerance among Sri Lankans toward dishonest politics.

“The wish of the millions of people in our country is for the politics of lying to end,” he said, stressing that the era of fraudulent political conduct must be brought to a close.

Under the leadership of UNP leader and Sri Lanka’s eighth Executive President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, the party has been actively educating its officials and activists over the past month about its future programme and ongoing party reorganisation.

Meetings were held in the Balapitiya and Ambalangoda electoral divisions of the Galle District as part of these efforts.

Abeywardana said that the public’s desire is for everyone to unite and create a programme for the country’s well-being.

“This understanding is why, after taking over the presidency on 20 July 2022, President Ranil Wickremesinghe addressed Parliament and asked everyone to join a national policy framework,” he said.

He stressed that politicians who continue to lie for votes and power, acting outside this framework, will face the consequences and be unable to confront the electorate in the future.
