Opposition weighs legal action over Govt’s disaster response

Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), said it is still considering whether to pursue legal action against the government over what it alleges was a failure to mitigate damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

SJB General Secretary MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the party has not reached a final decision and that discussions are ongoing.

Internal debate within the party has intensified following public criticism from some SJB members.

MP S.M. Marikkar, speaking at a press conference last week, said the current administration should be held responsible for the scale of destruction caused by the cyclone.

He accused the government of inadequate preparedness and claimed authorities failed to act despite prior warnings.

Marikkar said the party would explore filing a criminal case, drawing a comparison between the human impact of the cyclone and the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

He also suggested that any legal action could follow the model of cases previously filed against members of the Rajapaksa family over the country’s financial crisis.
