A private member’s motion moved by National Democratic Front’s Ravi Karunanayake for the abolition of the pension scheme for members of parliament was passed in parliament yesterday (07).

Speaking during the motion’s debate, the former finance minister said he intended by it to restore the public trust on the MPs breached by a certain party with its claim of pensions being traitorous to society.

Since parliament represents the aspirations of the public, what is needed is to fulfil their needs, Karunanayake added.

NPP endorses motion

Winding up the debate, prime minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya said the National People’s Power (NPP) welcomed the motion, although some in the opposition spoke irrelevancies without understanding its importance.

“The NPP fully supports it”, she added.
