Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has revealed that several Members of Parliament elected under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) banner will resign their parliamentary seats to contest the upcoming Provincial Council elections.

Premadasa made the announcement on October 11 during the inauguration of the D.S. Senanayake Faculty of Political Science and Sustainable Development at the SJB headquarters, where he also serves as patron.

He explained that the MPs’ decision to step down is driven by the aim of securing a SJB-led government at the provincial level.

The Opposition Leader described the move as a rare sacrifice while in opposition.

“What is the purpose of making sacrifices and contributions to win the Provincial Council? It is to strengthen and uplift the party. These sacrifices are being made with the ultimate goal of forming a Samagi Jana Balawegaya government and a President of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya,” he said.
