Chairman of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Imtiaz Bakir Marker has called for party reforms based on correct linkages between the leadership and the grassroots membership.

He has written to the party leader and the general secretary, asking that no opportunities be given to parachutists in the making of leaders and to contractors in carrying out party propaganda.

In the letter, he has given 12 recommendations for several changes to the party.

They include holding all party meetings in an organized manner, a single stand on party opinions, making decisions and functioning as a party, timely progress reviews at all levels and a mechanism for student and youth movement members to rise up the ladder.

Marker also suggested ready access to the party leadership, proper communication with regard to social media and a political dialogue targeting youths and internal democracy by holding party elections on time.

Raising political awareness among new voters and deciding candidate selection yardsticks for local government and provincial council polls with at least 25 pc representation of youths and women each are also included.

The letter has been copied to party treasurer Harsha de Silva and national organizer Tissa Attanayake.
