General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Duminda Dissanayake announced that the party will contest the upcoming local government elections under the ‘Chair’ symbol.

During a media briefing at the SLFP headquarters on February 18, Dissanayake shared the party’s readiness for the elections, despite the Election Commission yet to issue the final gazette announcing the date.

He mentioned that while the commission’s official confirmation is awaited, the SLFP is fully prepared, with potential candidates eager for nominations.

Dissanayake also addressed the possibility of forming a coalition with other political parties, leaving the door open for potential alliances.

He made it clear, however, that the SLFP will not be contesting under the ‘Betel Leaf’ symbol, and that campaign preparations are already in full swing.

Dissanayake also criticised the government’s handling of the national budget, particularly critiquing the President’s statements on salary increments which failed to match the rising cost of living.

He asserted that the promises made to public servants were vague and misleading, leading them to believe in significant pay hikes.

“The government’s approach is merely a show, with nothing substantial behind it. The promises made to public servants were vague, and we believe they were misled into thinking their salaries would be significantly raised,” Dissanayake remarked, comparing the government’s actions to the theatrics seen in political arenas.
