The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) have raised concerns about the salary revisions proposed in the 2025 budget.
Issuing a statement, the association highlighted several ambiguous aspects of the salary adjustments and announced that a special committee on salary issues will be convened on Friday (February 21) to address these uncertainties.
During a meeting of the association’s executive board, a decision was taken to further explore the details of the proposed salary revisions.
GMOA spokesperson Dr. Chamila Wijesinghe explained that the association would closely analyze issues concerning the salaries of doctors, specialist physicians, and allowances for additional duties.
He said that discussions will focus on potential disparities in salary scales and how these may impact doctors across the country.
The GMOA emphasized the importance of salary adjustments in retaining medical professionals within Sri Lanka.
Dr. Wijesinghe pointed out that previous statements by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake have consistently highlighted the need to retain doctors in the country.
He further noted that the tradition of not reducing salaries in any sector through the national budget should be upheld.
The association also underlined that the issue of salary increases for doctors has been repeatedly raised, as it is considered vital for the country’s healthcare system.
It also expressed hope that the upcoming discussions would clarify these concerns and determine the necessary steps to ensure a fair and sustainable resolution to the ongoing challenges.
