Discussions between the United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) on a potential political alliance are ongoing, with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa reportedly laying down a key condition that any future joint front must be led by the SJB.

The SJB has appointed a three-member committee comprising MPs Kabir Hashim, Mujibur Rahman, and S.M. Marikkar to prepare a framework for the merger.

The committee is expected to examine how a potential merger could proceed while preserving each party’s political identity, structure, and strategy.

A senior SJB MP said that a majority within the party believes a united opposition platform is necessary to effectively challenge the ruling government.

Talks, led by the General Secretaries of both parties, are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
