Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has named two high-profile additions to its national coaching setup, appointing Julian Wood as National Batting Coach and Dr. Rene Ferdinands as National Spin Bowling Coach.
Julian Wood, widely regarded as a pioneer in modern power-hitting techniques, begins a one-year tenure effective 1 October 2025.
Creator of the “Power Hitting Program”, Wood blends biomechanics and cutting-edge training methodologies to enhance players’ striking abilities.
Wood’s resume includes stints with the England and Wales Cricket Board, several English county sides, and IPL franchise Punjab Kings.
He is no stranger to Sri Lankan cricket, having conducted a week-long training camp with national squads earlier this year ahead of major international tournaments, including the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Meanwhile, Dr. Rene Ferdinands, a biomechanical expert in spin bowling, assumes his role from 30 September 2025 on a two-year contract.
With a PhD from the University of Waikato, Ferdinands brings a scientific approach to spin development.
He has previously worked with New Zealand Cricket and the National Cricket Academy in India, delivering performance analytics and injury prevention strategies for elite bowlers.
In Sri Lanka, Ferdinands will oversee spin bowling training, match preparation, player development, and technical analysis across all formats.
