Western Province dominated the wrestling arena at the National Sports Festival, clinching the overall championship title at the event held at the Indoor Stadium of Kelaniya University on Saturday (26).
Western Province wrestlers secured 6 out of 10 gold medals in the men’s division, with the Central Province trailing behind with 3 golds.
In the women’s division, North Western Province led the pack with 6 gold medals, while Western Province added 4 to their tally.
The spotlight, however, shone brightest on Tharindu Dakshitha of Western Province and Madushani Kumari of North Western Province, who were named Best Wrestlers in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. Tharindu claimed gold in the 57kg weight class, while Madushani triumphed in the 65kg category.
Their performances stood out in a fiercely contested tournament that showcased some of the country’s finest wrestling talent and regional athletic strength.
